Our client was due to carry out a residential housing development however a badger sett was impacting proposed plans. Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 it is an offence to interfere with or disturb an occupied sett, so Zirkon were asked to assist with closing the sett under licence and encourage the badgers to use a new artificial sett created by us nearby.

What we did

  • Installed one-way badger gates
  • Surrounded the existing setts with badger-proof mesh to prevent the badgers from entering.
  • Removed trees within the new artificial sett location.
  • Constructed an artificial sett consisting of 10 nesting chambers and connected the chambers with a network of tunnels and access points.
  • The sett was buried to a depth of at least 1.25m.

The Outcome

  • Works were completed within the 2 week timescale and on budget.
  • Adhered to the budget with no unforseen costs

Once the new artificial sett had been baited with some tasty treats, the project ecologists confirmed that the sett was being used by badgers within a matter of days.

The client and project ecologist were both very satisfied with the service provided by the Zirkon team. The development project could then commence with no delays or major restrictions.

This project was a great opportunity for ZIRKON to showcase our experience within this environmental sector. The project was a great success and a survey of the artificial sett revealed the badgers using it shortly after installation.
